Ipswich River Study

Teachers at all levels recently took part in a curriculum workshop put on by the Ipswich River Watershed Association.  From this informational session set up by Linda Morkeski of Computer Tech Support, teachers have begun developing curriculum that will be a cross grade/discipline study.  This study will dovetail nicely with the expectation of the MCAS test (at grades 8 & 10) giving our students an extra plus come test time.

GRADE 7 LIFE SCIENCE
Students on teams Red, White, & Blue are off to a great start in science.
Team 7 Blue is recording weather info with homemade instruments.  They have also completed a walking class to collect and classify seeds.  Team 7 Red is beginning a study of wetlands.  They have just had a day of study at the Audubon Sanctuary in Topsfield.  Team 7 White has enjoyed their lab work (set to music) and is starting more in depth microscope work.  Students are learning how to use the video microscopy unit to show the entire class their slides.

8th Grade Earth Science

8th Grade Earth Science focused this fall on astronomy, including observational esperiences.  Winter studies are meterology, including the use of the internet to obtain real-time weather data from across the country and use it for both comparison and prediction purposes.  Spring will bring a study of geology of the Earth.

Our  Unsung Heroes
There are two ladies who not only make our job easier but directly impact the quality of education we are able to provide your child.  Mrs. Pat garten and Mrs. Nancy Kucera are our science aides.  They help coordinate all of the chemicals, supplies and lab equipment needed for all of our classes.  The task is incredible.  For example: the Grade 7 Life Science students which number over 350, are in 16 class sections taught by three science teachers and a special ed teacher.  They share one set of lab equipment i.e. microscopes.

Thank You Ladies!
Teacher  Profiles:
Mr. James Dillon has just joined the Masco staff teaching Earth/Space Science in grade 8.  For the past seven years he taught Earth/Space Science in, Meteorology, and Biology at Alvirne High School in Hudson, N. H.  He has stated that he is impressed with both his students here at Masco and with the energy and commitment of the Science Staff at Masco.

Mrs. Robin Tomasino started at Masco in the fall of '96.  She has taught Biology, Physical Science, Earth Science, and Life Science.  Currently, she is the science teacher on 7 Blue.  She came to us from Merrimack College where she taught Bio for the non science majors and the Zoology labs.  She was also in charge of Project RAISE through Merrimack's Urban Institute coordinating science seminars for teachers in Lawrence.  She is also a Project Learning Tree Instructor, a Project Wild facilitator and is teaching a course now for local teachers.

Mr. Kenneth Ballon was born in New York City and graduated from the State University College.  He taught three years in New York on Long Island.  More recently, he has taught for ten  years in Amesbury, and will have completed his 10th year at Masco at the end of this school year.  Mr. Ballon teaches Tech and Woodworking.
Ms. Markos' Grade 9 Physical Science classes have been busy learning various topics iin Physics this year via several hands-on activities.  One week-long lab activity included using MBL (Microcomputer Based Lab) technology.  The computer technology was loaned to Ms. Markos by Tufts University's Center for Math and Science as part of their "Tools for Scientific thinking" project.  Ms. Markos' classes helped Dr. Ronald Thornton of Tufts to gather data on the effectiveness of this technology on learning Physics concepts.
Mr. Ballon's wood tech students are working on or have finished excellent pieces of furnituyre from Adirondack chairs to Skidoo sleds.
College Prep Biology classes taught by Mr. Uhrich visited a Quaking Bog in Aandover on October 16th.  They were excited to use the new Masco  digital cameraa.  Studnets took many pictures of the bog and were later able to store them in the computer for media presentations.  Many of the photos have already been used on poter presentatations as well.  We are glad Masco obtained this new photographic equipment for student use!
The 8th Grade Earth Science department offered an optional field trip to the Charles Hayden Planetarium at the Boston Museum of Science to see "The Sky Tonight" on Friday evening Nov. 6th.  The program, presented by the Museum staff, was about how to locate and identify coonstellations and individual stars in our local sky.  The trip was open to all Earth Science students and their parents.  Forty-three students and six parents, went along with Mr. Peck, Mr. Dillon, and Mr. Piccillo.
