¿QUIÉNES SON? y ¿DÓNDE ESTÁN?

             

[Where Spanish is spoken; who and where are they?]

INTRODUCTION

BE SURE TO READ THE OVERVIEW, TASKS LIST AND ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU START SEARCHING. YOU WILL THEN BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT IS BEING ASKED OF YOU AND SEE WHAT RESOURCES ARE ALREADY AVAILABLE TO YOU.

 OVERVIEW/INSTRUCTIONS

*   You and your partner[s] will select one of the more than twenty countries or regions you wish to investigate where Spanish is either the official language of that nation or where a large segment of the population speaks Spanish.

*   You will complete all of the tasks assigned you.

*   You will keep a journal/log of sites you explored with some brief notes about each to clarify and remind you where and what you found at each one.

*   You will keep a strict record of any site from which you extracted information for your bibliography / webography.

*   You will complete a summary sheet given you by your teacher which will be graded as part of this project.

*   You will submit a poster [or facsimile] which you consider visually appealing, suitable for display in the classroom, and that contains elements of interest about and/or from your selected country / region. This too will be graded as part of this project.

*   You will report your findings to the class in a two-five-minute oral presentation. Your teacher and your classmates will evaluate your oral presentation.

*   You will complete a self-evaluation [checklist] of your work on this project.

*   You will complete an evaluation [checklist] of your partner[s] work on this project.

*   You will rate this project [checklist] on its educational value, enjoyment, and ease or difficulty.

 


TASKS

*   SELECT A COUNTRY [You must get approval from the teacher. First come, first served].

*   TRY TO FIND YOUR COUNTRY’S OFFICIAL WEBSITE. Be sure to record the URL [website address].

*   If you do not find a functioning official site, report what you found /learned and select an alternative site

*   Find out if the site has an English version

*   Make notes on the sorts of things that interest you [or not] from the official site [or an alternative one]

*   Once you have found the official site [or a good substitute]

*   FIND THE FOLLOWING:

*   Where your country is located [region of the world in layman’s terms, not longitude and latitude]

·       Neighboring countries, natural and/or political borders, etc

*   The capitol of your country

*   An image of your country’s flag

*   Circumstances of its founding

*   System of government

*   National religion [or absence thereof]

*   Currency

*   Any and all official languages

*   Its size in relation to the other Spanish speaking nations and the other nations of the world

*   Main industries, major economies, products, exports and imports, or other significant economic data

*   What the population consists of [indigenous peoples, Europeans, Americans, mixed ethnicities, etc.]

*   GO TO THE CIA [Central Intelligence Agency] Factbook to find any information you did not obtain from the official website.

*   You will also find additional resources there that you may want to visit to augment your poster and/or summary.

*   GO TO THE US CENSUS BUREAU SITE ON WORLD POPULATIONS

*   Enter your country and go to Country Summary

*   FIND the following information for your selected country or region

*   Be sure and go to the Glossary on this site if you encounter terms you do not understand

Population

Growth rate   

Life expectancy at birth

Infant mortality rate

Under 5 mortality rate

Migration

Net migration rate  

Net number of migrants 

NEXT…

*   GO to the Country Summary for the United States

*   FIND the statisctics for the same criteria/categories for the United States as you did for your chosen country.

*   COMPARE and analyze the statisctics of your selected country and those of the U.S.A.

*   What hypothesis or conclusions might you draw from even this small amount of data?

 


ONCE YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE ABOVE TASKS

*   BEGIN compiling material for your poster

*   Use information and resources you have already discovered, as well as the links below and other links you may have encountered, to assemble your poster material

*   Your poster must include all, but not only, the following

*   No less than six photographs or images relevant to your country

*   An image of the national flag

*   An  image, example and/or description of art or artisanship from your country

*   Photos representative of the population

*   Three famous landmarks

*   An indigenous animal and its Spanish name

*   A Spanish vocabulary list of no less than ten words relevant to your country

YOUR ORAL REPORT

*   Your oral report will be easier to organize  after you have completed all of the above tasks. You will have gathered materials for your poster and summary sheet and visited numerous websites.

*   You should keep this in mind as you are performing the listed tasks. Save, copy, or make notes in your journal/log as you go along to assist you later.

*   REMEMBER: You have only five [5] minutes to present.

*   You need to be organized and concise.

*   You will be expected to answer any questions the class or the teacher might have for you.                      

*   Every member of your project partnership must speak during your oral presentation.

CONCLUSIONS and EVALUATIONS

*      Conclusion

Students will learn that each Spanish speaking country, although having many common cultural and historical similarities, also has unique qualities which establish its independent identity among other Latino/Hispanic nations and that of its people.
Students will learn specific information about their selected countries [as listed among the different student tasks] and be exposed to like information about the other countries chosen by their classmates.
