STAPH/MRSA INFECTION
In recent weeks, MRSA has been a headline in the news. Formerly an infection most often found in hospitals, it is now showing up in schools, especially amongst sports teams due to their close contact. MRSA is a type of "staph" bacteria that is resistant to many antibiotics. It usually presents as a skin infection with or without fever. Symptoms can include redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness and pus at the site. MRSA is primarily spread through contact with the bacteria, either by direct person-to-person contact or indirectly through shared equipment, personal articles/objects or contaminated surfaces. Most staph infections are minor and may be easily treated.
PREVENTION
- Regular handwashing with soap and warm water (alcohol-based hand sanitizer).
- Keeps cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until they have healed.
- Avoid sharing personal items such as washcloths, razors, towels, bars of soap and deodorant.
- Shower after participating in contact sports.
- Contact your Dr. if you have a skin infection that doesn't heal.
