Introduction

An attorney has just contacted you and a long lost relative from Bora Bora has left you $15,000 in their will, but……there are a few stipulations:

·       You must invest the $15,000 in the stock market.

o      You must purchase 3 stocks-----$5,000 for each stock.

Is putting your money in the Stock Market a sound investment?

Task

Find three companies to invest the $15,000.   The three companies must be different types of companies.  For example, a retailer (Gap), a biotechnology company (MGI Pharma,Inc.), a basic materials company (International Paper), a financial company (Mercantile Bank Corp), a transportation company (Southwest Airlines) or any other type of industry.

Every Friday, record the closing price of each stock on a spreadsheet.  Check the closing price at http://finance.yahoo.com/.

In December, you will graph the results of each stock using Excel.

The final product will be a PowerPoint presentation that includes the Excel graphs, and information about each company including the name, ticker symbol, the type of company, and its’ competition.

Answer the following questions about your investments:

Would you invest in this company?

Why or Why not?

What advice can you give someone about investing in the Stock Market?

     those.

2.  Once you have decided on your three stocks enter the full company name and Ticker symbol on

your spreadsheet in a header.  Include the following column headings:

Date (Fridays only), # of shares, Price Per Share, Balance, Profit/Loss

     Use formulas!!!!!  (Follow the example)

4.  Every Friday, check your stock at: http://finance.yahoo.com/ ---put your ticker symbol in. Enter the

price per share on the spreadsheet.  All other columns should change because formulas have been

entered on the spreadsheet and dragged down.   Mrs. Monaco will review formulas in class.

5   Write three checks to purchase the stocks.   The Payee (person receiving the check) is your banker—

Mrs. Monaco. Fill in the check register.   The beginning balance is $15,000.  Use checks #1, #2 and #3.

On the memo line enter the name of the stock and the number of shares purchased.

6.   This step can be worked during your free time!!!!!!

After you have entered the correct amounts every Friday on your spreadsheet continue working on

the information for each of your three stocks.  The information is for your PowerPoint presentation.

Visual

Slideshow is attractive.  The fonts are easy-to-read and font size varies appropriately for headings and text.

Text is appropriate in length.

The background and colors enhance the readability of text.

The graphics, sound and/or animation assist in presenting an overall theme and make visual connections that enhance understanding of concept, ideas and relationships.

The slideshow is attractive and interesting.  It includes all the elements

Sometimes the fonts are easy-to-read, but in a few places the use of fonts, italics, bold, long paragraphs, color or busy background detracts and does not enhance readability.  Animation is distracting in a few places

Overall readability is difficult with lengthy paragraphs, too many different fonts, dark or busy background, overuse of bold or lack of appropriate indentations of text.  Animation is inappropriate and distracting

The text is extremely difficult to read with long blocks of text and small font size, inappropriate contrasting colors, poor use of headings, subheadings, indentations, or bold formatting.  Animation has nothing to do with enhancing the concepts of the slideshow
