A Spanish Travel Brochure Project

A Webquest Designed to answer the Essential Question

Does a foreign language influence culture and transcend across national borders and continental waters?

                                     ***Introduction***

You have been studying Spanish for a year now.  You have learned that Spanish is spoken all around the world.  We have already studied that Spanish is spoken in Spain, of course, and Mexico and Puerto Rico. What other countries speak Spanish?  Are all Spanish speaking countries the same?  Do they eat the same food, listen to the same music, wear the same clothes, have the same art and architecture, use the same monetary unit, and have the same weather?  The essential question is “Does a foreign language influence culture and transcend across national borders and continental waters?”

                                     ***Task***

Your task is to choose another Spanish speaking country other than Spain, Puerto Rico or Mexico that you would like to learn about and share your knowledge with your fellow students.  You are to take on the role of a travel agent and it is your task to sell me a trip to this country via a travel brochure.  You are to research the library books that have been provided by our librarian, Mrs. Green, on the resource shelf and search the internet links on this webquest for information on your country. You may also search the web for more information but I found these sites to be very reliable and time saving for you. You are to find things that are most appealing to a traveler, like monuments, museums, historical spots, weather, foods, and recreational spots. You are to find influences of Spanish culture and differences from what you already know.  You will compile these by way of photos.  A well prepared traveler knows what places he wants to visit.  He also knows what to bring on his trip.  It is your job to remind him what to bring by way of a checklist. For extra credit you may make an additional brochure of a region in Spain, Mexico or Puerto Rico. The extra credit is due the same date the project is due. If you finish your brochure early you may earn extra points by doing the extra brochure or you may assist a fellow student who is having difficulty with the technology aspect of this project.

                                 ***Process***

The entire brochure must be in Spanish. ¡No inglés! You must pass in a rough draft that includes the following on the task list. this must be corrected by me before you produce your final brochure. You have 5 days to complete the brochure. Your grade will go down one whole grade for each day it is received late. Use the following links to find your information on the web.

                           a welcome or greeting

                                      the weather

                                      five articles of clothing

                                      five typical foods

After you have completed the rough draft you may begin searching for photos that you want to decorate your brochure with.  You will need the handout provided on Creating a Brochure using MS Publisher . Simply follow the directions from this handout that Mrs. Castraberti has made for you.  Remember to use the brochure style that has 3 panels. On the first page you will need to create the cover, the back flap and the inside flap.  Make sure your greeting is on the cover and your checklist is on the backflap. You may add any other additional information on the second page.  All pages must be complete.  When you add a picture from the internet make sure you cite the source.  Don’t forget to save often!

Use may also use the Shortcut Keys for other Windows Software handout to insert the foreign language accents or use insert symbols on the toolbar.  Remember these are important because it may make a difference in meaning without an accent.

You will be graded on your project according to the rubric that follows below.  In your best interest you should refer to the rubric many times to see exactly what is expected of you. All my expectations are there for a good grade, there are no surprises. Use the task list above to check things off as you complete them to make sure you have absolutely everything you need in the project that is being required. Also look at the sample projects on the table in the computer lab to see what constitutes an excellent project, a good project, and a fair project.  Use your imagination and be creative when designing your brochure.  Make sure you are careful to type correctly because I will be marking off for spelling.  Again remember ¡NO INGLÉS!

                                   ***Conclusion***

In conclusion, I hope you have all enjoyed doing this alternate assessment instead of a boring old test. With the help of Mrs. Castraberti we were able to learn how flexible the publisher software is. I think we made such beautiful travel brochures that we could start our own travel company. We were able to cover informal () commands; vocabulary about clothing, greetings, foods, modes of transportation, and travel items; and weather expressions.  We learned some important information about all the Spanish speaking countries in the world in just a few days! We found  out about some of our misconceptions about Spanish culture and how Spain has influenced the world. Now where would you like to travel? Me? I want to go everywhere! ¡Vamos!
