Handouts and Activities

Science-7, Life Science, is the study of living things and their interactions with the environment. Science and the study of living things is important to each of us in our everyday lives; this course is designed to show you how! Through exciting lessons and hands on activities we will all gain a greater appreciation of the impact we all have on the natural world around us.

Our year will be broken down into three major units: Ecology, Genetics, and Evolution. During our ecology unit, which runs from September through December we will studying the amazing diversity of life on this planet. In addition to numerous class activities we will head outside to study the environment in which we live. While studying our local environment we will investigate the impact we, humans, have on the environment both locally and globally.

The second unit focuses on bacteria, cells, and genetics and runs from January until just after April vacataion. We begin this unit by studying bacteria, how they help us, the diseases they cause, as well as our body's reactions. After finishing with bacteria we will look at cells and processes inside our bodies. Finally, we will end the unit studying DNA and genetics as they relate to heredity.

At the end of April we begin our unit on evolution and geologic time scales. We begin by looking at the age of the earth and the changes that have occurred in the past 4.6 billion years. Once we have an understanding of geologic time and the forces that are constantly acting on every living organisms we begin our study of evolution. Students will learn about the mechanism that drives evolution, the evidence supporting evolution, as well as examples of evolution in action.

Throughout the year our students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of group projects ranging from experimental explorations to library research. While working to expand their understanding of biology each student will also improve their computer skills, become a better researcher and a more independent learner. Please let us know if you have any questions.S
