12 Angry Men "Is-It-Worth-It" Guide
NotesTwelve Angry Men is one of the great movies. It has tight, dramatic dialogue, interesting character exposition, excellent pacing and powerful acting by one of the best ensemble casts ever put together in the moives. But, the movie begins with a mistake. Within the first three minutes, before we get to the jury room, we see the courtroom where the bored, disinterested judge gives the jury its instructions. As the twelve men move into the deliberations room, one looks back at the defendent - and we see him. This is a mistake. First, because we should never see the defendent. The boy on trial should be a faceless unknown. It is a mistake in the second place because of the face Sidney Lumet attaches to the defendent. It is the face of a pathetic, mouse of a boy. The eyes of the boy are large and pleading to the jury as they leave the courtroom. It is the face the audience would want to be innocent. There should not be this prejudice on the part of the audience. It is a mistake.E-mail Thomas Trevenen
