NotesAn ordinary man, George Malley, well liked, popular, looks up in the sky and is touched by a light that comes from the heavens. From this touch (or was it a touch?), George begins to gain power and intelligence. As George gains knowledge, he wants to communicate to others about what he knows and want he feels but others are afraid of him.George will die because of his gifts. He is a sacrifice to the world. As the movie goes on, it makes on more and more Biblical allusions. His best friend is Nate Pope. His friends deny him. Crowds press upon him seeking healing, answers. Lace cuts his hair at one point in the film that is reminiscent of Jesus being anointed with oil by Mary Magdelene. At one point George explains his coming death to Lace's son. As he does so, he enacts a scene of communion. The songs of the sound track are obvious allusions to the divinity of George: "Have a Little Faith in Me" and "If I Could Change the World" and "Love Child." Phenomenon has definite links to the savior motif. In the final scene, the entire community gathers together to celebrate the day of George's birth as if it were the beginning of a new holiday tradition. The important thing to remember with this movie in particular and with
the savior motif in general is that this does not promote a Christian
philosophy. The ideas expressed in Phenomenon are definitely not
Christian and the savior motif applies to all cultures where one human
being sacrifices herself for the benefit of others. George Malley wants
to give of himself so others may live better. His community and country
turn on him because the can not understand the power of his ideas and his
new capabilities. For this and for this only is he punished.
