NETFLIX NEW RELEASES MAKE PEOPLE UNHAPPY
OPINION By Julia Graves
Netflix has become more focused on creating new movies and TV shows that are investigating chilling true stories.
Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, is one of the new releases on Netflix. It is about the horrific story of the serial killer and cannibal Jeffery Dahmer. The show walks the audience through his life, starting from his childhood and going into the murders he committed, which allows viewers to see how he became the person he was. The show practically idolizes him and sympathizes with him. At the end of the show, he wants to get baptized to “be one with God” and to show that he is trying to get better, and that’s when viewers feel bad for him. The show was extremely graphic and was spot on to the true story.
According to interviews and articles about him and his story, almost everything he said in the show was accurate to what happened in real life, which can be traumatizing and extremely difficult to watch for people affected by Dahmer’s actions. He hurt so many families and re-watching what people went through is traumatizing for them. Even if the families tried to avoid the show, it was nearly impossible to avoid people talking about it online
People asked viewers how they felt and 90% of people said this should not be on Netflix, and should not be visible to kids. This show is giving people affected signs of post-traumatic stress disorder and is making it hard for them to move on from those horrible memories.
Another big hit is The Watcher. This is another true story about the Broaddus family, who bought a house in New Jersey and soon realized that someone was watching over them the entire time. The “watcher” would send them notes and hide things around the house so the family knew someone was watching over them.
Like Dahmer, this show also aims to glorify and make entertainment out of tragedy. The Watcher was chilling, and the fact that it was real and something that actually happened is terrifying. Making shows and movies like these is something that is making Netflix look bad because people don’t want to relive these horrific memories. The case that inspired The Watcher is still open and to this day no one knows who it was.
The New York Post said that the new owners have not reported any suspicious issues since they moved into the home. However, showing and highlighting the crimes that took place seems like a horrible way to bring attention to tragedy and trouble to innocent homeowners.
After watching these stories, Netflix should not be promoting these shows due to inflicting and reviving signs of post-traumatic stress disorder and invoking new fears to the audience, especially young viewers.
