Sixty-eight sophomores are participating in a pen pal program with an elementary school in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Masconomet students have been writing to second graders as part of a new community service program run by the sophomore English teachers. The program was established with the goals of making the community service experience at Masconomet more active and more meaningful for all students involved and of contributing to the social and emotional well-being of our students with a focus on volunteerism as a way of life.
After several letter writing exchanges, the Masconomet students boarded two buses last Friday for a meet and greet with their pen pals. The excitement of the Masconomet students was palpable as they eagerly met their pen pals. The joy was not limited to Masconomet students. In a note of appreciation, a representative from the Lawrence school wrote, “The (Lawrence) students were so happy and will not forget this experience. One of the teachers just told me that in her class there is a student who is usually very shy and doesn't smile much. She mentioned that this student really connected with her pen pal and noticed that she was smiling and more social than usual. Your students really went above and beyond to make their pen pals feel special.”
