For the second year in a row, seniors Leigh Appelstein, Katelin Kim and Sophie Weaver took home the grand prize at the MA Dept. of Fire Services’ annual YouTube Burn Awareness PSA contest. They came in first place out of over 50 submissions, and were awarded $200 and a Nikon camera.

The contest is co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Property Insurance Underwriting Association (MPIUA) and the Massachusetts Association of Safety and Fire Educators (MaSAFE) to promote burn safety, teach students the dangerous, life-long consequences of misusing fire, and to counter incorrect and incomplete information about fire and burns on the Internet.

The awards ceremony was held at Shriners Hospital in Boston where the girls were presented with their award by State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey and Saugus Fire Chief Michael C. Newbury of the Fire Chiefs’ Association of Massachusetts, along with contest co-sponsors Ron Meehan from the Mass. Property Insurance Underwriting Association (MPIUA) and Capt. Rick Tustin, president of the Mass. Association of Safety and Fire Educators (MaSAFE).
