On March 28th the Environmental Club hosted their yearly movie screening for the Masconomet community. More than 250 people (including staff and students in both the middle and high schools) came out to see A Plastic Ocean. This 2016 documentary film follows a team of international scientists on adventures in more than 20 locations as they explore and expose the causes and consequences of plastic pollution. Though the event was free to attendees, the club raised over $300.00 through donations and from the sale of snacks, stickers, and stainless steel straws; this money has been donated to the Surfrider Foundation, whose mission is to protect our oceans and beaches from pollution.
The Environmental Club would like to thank the staff, students, and community for their continued support of the club’s events and initiatives. This spring they will be helping to run Earth Day events in Middleton and Topsfield; launching a campaign against the use of plastic straws, which includes the sale of stainless steel straws; continuing their sale of club stickers; promoting textile recycling using the bins on school property; and working to bring composting to the school cafeteria. Stay tuned for more information on each of these exciting developments!
